The postpartum period is unlike any other. It is a short season of life where mothers recover from delivery, babies adjust to life outside the womb, and a close bond is forged between them. Though brief, it is a time of amazing intensity and massive adjustment.
Currently, we recognize the importance of cocooning baby in the weeks following birth so they can shift slowly and gradually into life outside the womb. Yet, in other times, a womyn used the first forty days to heal and rest. It was understood that new mothers were as vulnerable as their newborns, requiring their own steady stream of attention, care, and support. But we have forgotten the time-honoured wisdom that this special cocoon of care should extend to the birther as well.
The postpartum period is an amazing opportunity for a womyn to revitalize herself and replenish her reserves, creating a solid foundation from which to tackle the demands of mothering (whether for the first time, the second, or more). Postpartum recovery can help deter future illness and depression and preserve a womyn's reproductive health for future children.

After going through a major life-changing experience like birth, a womyn’s body is now shifting to postpartum mode – producing breast milk, shrinking the uterus back to size, adjusting to changes in hormones, and managing new demands on your energy. It is important to heal from the physical strains of childbirth, have sufficient sleep, and eat well.
Postpartum self-care is just as important as mothering. Health and well-being are a priority – the better a mother feels, the more she’ll be able to adjust and thrive in her new role. Postpartum self-care involves taking time to recover with nourishing postpartum meals, rest, support, and fresh air. Give yourself permission to nest, which could mean:

For new parents, now is the time to channel energy towards resting, recovering, and caring for baby. A friend or family member can help by prepping and cooking some healthy meals or by holding baby so mothers can eat, rest, and take a break.

The BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres and First Nations Health Authority jointly offer funding to cover the costs of birth doula and postpartum doula services for pregnant Indigenous mothers and families, living in BC (both on and off reserve). This partnership works towards bringing birth closer to home and back into the hands of womyn. Grants provide funding up to a maximum of $1000 in coverage for doula services for each womyn’s birth and postpartum needs.
